Finally, one other unexpected bonus that I noted from using the Bar Mitts is that when I’d stop to take photos, mess with my gear, or lay my bike down for any reason–whether intentional, or unintentional in a crash–having the mitts over my bars kept my grips dry. William Beck is a long-distance, year-round cyclist from Maryland who enjoys riding with the DC Randonneurs. I have a set of Moose Mitts I got this year and if not for them I don't think I would have ridden much/at all, my hands are just too messed up from too many bad rides with wrong gloves.

In a never ending quest to figure out how to keep my hands warm during cold Midwest winters, I stumbled across Bar Mitts at the Iceman Cometh Challenge MTB race a few months ago. I used to use various homemade contraptions and ATV handwarmers for temperatures in the 15F and below range. After getting caught out by a low snow line on a recent gravel ride —and crying in my car afterwards as the fingers painfully came back to life—, I turned to Bar Mitts to see how these compared to the best winter cycling gloves. My favorite part about the mitts is that you can wear a very thin glove – a full finger fall or spring glove is usually plenty under bar mitts. These are waterproof and wind-resistant neoprene pogies that attach simply to your handlebars via three Velcro straps. I got some relatively thin (not bulky) Pearl Izumi lobster gloves as pictured above (but can only fit the thinnest of silk glove liners inside them cuz despite getting the largest size they make, they are not very loose) which I can get into the bar mitts but it gets pretty crowded in there.

While visually the pogies may look bulky and awkward, in reality putting the wind barrier over the grips, shifters, and brake levers in their entirety means that you have a more natural feel for the controls, equivalent to normal summer riding. We've simply republished information exactly as we got it from our supplier without curating or improving it.The larger size is a tad heavier, which makes it more important that it has a solid connection with the handlebars to keep them in place.

The strong stitching along the seams creates a wind tight seal and, with the removable cuffs, keeps your wrists warm and out of the elements as well. Unless you are familiar with the particular wrench required and how they are they attached, it’s not going to be an easy grab-and-go operation. With a wide opening to accommodate your coat sleeves, you’ll be able to place your hands in and out at a moment’s notice. In the thrall of global climate change, winters here in the Pacific Northwest have become increasingly more severe.I was happy to be able to grab a bottle, open a bar/gel, or use my cycling computer whenever I wanted.

After installing the mitts, you can reach a hex wrench through the tiny hole which cause the rubber to bulb out and grip on the handlebars. They’re made of waterproof neoprene measuring 6mm thick, with warm fleece on the inside and nylon lamination on the exterior. Neoprene polychloroprene is a synthetic rubber, that was invented by DuPont scientists in 1930, and is produced by polymerization of chloroprene (C4H5Cl).

The design keeps your hands and bars completely protected from the elements and gives you better circulation. My hands were toasty warm, no matter what Mother Nature was tossing at me, whether it was the cold, snow or wind. With hands wrapped tightly around the bars, keeping the wind off is the number one thing that you can do to keep your hands warm.
