Archwood flourished partly because of the ones in Primvera, the Hyhborn Court that sat just beyond the woods outside of the manor, and my Hyhborn had punished the Mister.

Anyway, I’m sure there’s a variety of readers who are into this kind of thing, but unfortunately it fell so far beneath my expectations and I think marks the final end for me as a JLA reader. He is one of the most forward characters I’ve ever read, yet at the same time the audacity of him being so respectful. Naomi asked after a handful of moments, her voice lighter than it had been when she walked into the chamber. I’m listening to this on audiobook and although I usually like this narrator, it feels like it’s moving so slow to me. The plot twist regarding him that came at the end I have to say I did predict but felt nice to read.I might pick up the next one since I know this book was all about the set-up, I’ll forgive how clumsy it is, see where it goes… plus JLA’s FMCs are always so slow, it’s like I wanna see the look on their face when they realize everything I’ve known the whole time. The events at the end of the book had me wishing I could reach into the book and shake the shit out of her a few times because it was so obvious what was about to happen or that what she was being told was more than likely a lie yet she didn’t question it at all. There is a fantastic balance between the frequent dialogue and how JLA communicates emotions and world building. As someone who has read a decent amount of JLA and never really preferred them, I’m super curious as to where this would fall on my personal scale.

He’d gotten his son now, and Laurelin had been struck with the fever that had taken so many after birth. Our protagonist, Calista, is a gifted mind reader who grew up as an orphan on the streets, struggling with poverty and abandonment. There were honestly so many things I appreciated about her character, from her daily gardening, to hearing her inner thoughts and her openness when it comes to her body and sexuality (yes please and thank you!The romance, I'm a sucker for slow burn because I feel like if the romance isn't slow burn it makes it very unrealistic for ME but this one was hot and heartwarming at times but also too much at times. He’s somewhat cold, with barely any emotions, so it’s harder to get a warm, fuzzy feeling between the 2 but I have faith that JLA will dish out all the feels in the sequel.

Nankani captures the couple's developing relationship and imbues her performance with Calista's growing fear of her visions and her, at times, whiny personality. Looking up from the chamomile I’d been grinding into a powder for Baron Huntington’s teas, I saw Naomi standing in the doorway of my chamber. You start to piece everything together and it’s like one realization after another which is super exciting.JLA has been critiqued extensively for her repetitive 'I have a question' with Poppy, rather than just asking the fucking question, and this had the same rage inducing effect that I would have preferred be omitted. One night, Lis follows her intuition and saves a Hyhborn, essentially a god-like being, from his demise at the hands of mortals. Separated by vast wilderness teeming with monsters and unimaginable dangers, each city is now ruled by a guardian - royalty who feed on mortal pleasure.

There is a single, limited point of view via Lis, which happens to be my preference because I like surprises. Naomi wasn’t a projector, meaning she didn’t broadcast her thoughts and intentions like so many did, making them far too easy to read.

Though he had done so rather brutally, so I wasn’t sure that was a good example of a kind and caring Hyhborn. In fact, the plot is overshadowed by the romance but I don't mind it much as it was marketed as a spicy romantasy and that is exactly what I got.
