Additional Lay Rails and Station Expansion cards are available for purchase during the game, but your starting Normal Trains are the only ones you’ll get (more powerful train cars are purchased during the game). You can build into cities, which you can develop with Station Expansion cards to increase your victory point total at the end of the game; into remote locations which are worth straight VP; and across the board to interfere with or mooch off of your opponents’ builds. You win by scoring the most points, which you earn by building up your train, completing contracts, and delivering passengers. In fact, I would argue it's one of the lightest, smallest and least expansive games I own, but it's also one of the most fun.

Unlike Dominion’s approach that has you sitting on a runaway engine of victory point generation, Trains lets you build an engine, then bogs it down – as everything you do on the boards throws waste cards into your deck. In Rack-O some of the cards have abilities that players can take when they discard those cards from their rack. Isle of Trains: All Aboard is a card-based engine building game where cards have multiple uses: You can use cards as locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars, or buildings to improve the effectiveness and abilities of your train. Gain enough points from your railways and you will ultimately manage the most powerful railroads in modern Japan! Trains is not a game of mind-bending strategy, as any deck builder’s mechanics will rely on luck in some way or another. It is the height of the Steam Age and the whistle of the Iron Horse harkens the boom of small towns across the country into major hubs of transportation and economic growth. What makes Trains starkly different from other deck-builders is what you do when you use your cards. Its lack of options and depth mean it won’t be for everyone but with a small, portable footprint and rules that are easy to teach it works really well with a variety of groups and there is enough strategy (and lovely artwork) here to keep me enjoying it for a while. Sometimes this might involve playing suboptimally just to keep another player from getting that swap card they desperately need.

These contain additional 2-player maps as well as enhanced rules for 2-player games (like making smaller decks of cards to start the game and having static starting rail locations). There are 16 piles of cards to arrange in a common area; 8 of these are static from game to game, while the other 8 are determined randomly through the use of an included randomizer deck.
