Description

Script for a Jester's Tear is the only studio album by Marillion to feature the band's original drummer and founding member Mick Pointer, who was dismissed following the album's UK tour. However, he was seriously injured in a car accident when he drove home after completing work on the single. The second single, " Garden Party", was released on 6 June 1983 and became even more popular, peaking at number 16.

My favourite track is Forgotten Sons, I had studied War Poetry at English Lit and here was a modern war poem in my opinion except it was set in the troubles of Ireland. Script for a Jester's Tear was released in the United Kingdom on 13 March 1983 by EMI on vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve. In the title track a convoluted web of lyrical imagery invests its prosaic lost-my-girlfriend theme with a tortured passion previously alien to prog rock. The recording sessions for the album started in December 1982 at The Marquee Studios in London and finished in February 1983, with Tauber producing and Simon Hanhart engineering. In Martin Popoff's 2016 biography of Yes, the album is credited with being part of a "new wave" of British progressive rock which also helped to give a second life to earlier bands. after a recent Marillion rebirth in my CD collection I'm now aquiring the full back catalogue of the 'early' (the best years in my opinion - sorry Steve H) albums. As stated in the original liner notes, the music from the album was composed, arranged and performed by Marillion and the lyrics were written by Fish alone. Script for a Jester's Tear is the debut studio album by British neo-prog band Marillion, released in the United Kingdom on 14 March 1983 by EMI Records.

Allerdings muss man sagen, dass man "Script for a jester's tear" nicht einfach "nebenbei" hören kann. This is the first Marillion album featuring the original recording line-up of Fish [Vocals], Steve Rothery [Guitar], Peter Trewavas [Bass], Mick Pointer [Drums] and Mark Kelly [Keyboards]. Beautifully crafted debut album from one of the leading lights of the (relatively) short-lived progressive rock revival of the 1980s. The cover artwork was designed by Mark Wilkinson, who would be commissioned to the role on all Marillion releases through The Thieving Magpie (1988).Elsewhere, loss of another kind is explored in "Chelsea Monday"; Fish commendably vents his spleen at the establishment in "Forgotten Sons"--a crowd-stopping finale to Marillion's live show in those days--and pokes wordy fun at the toffs in the band's first and most unlikely hit, "Garden Party". He Knows You Know" gained some airplay in the United States and reached number 21 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. I was just cutting m teeth where my musical tastes were at this age and when introduced to this band realised I loved the story-telling of Fishes songs.

Wenn man ein und dieselbe CD zwei mal hat, spricht das ziemlich eindeutig dafür, dass diese Musik gefällt. It was produced by David Hitchcock, who was also contracted to work on the group's first full-length album. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

said that "as a debut album this [ Script for a Jester's Tear] is extremely impressive, fully living up to the band's previous promise". In 2020, EMI released a deluxe version of the album with four CDs and a Blu-ray disc that contains new remixes of the original album, the full "Market Square Heroes" 12" single (except for the original version of "Market Square Heroes" which is replaced by the "Battle Priest" version), and a previously unreleased live set from 1982 at London's Marquee Club.

This album features some of early Marillion's finest moments: every track is a stand out with my particular favourite being the haunting "Chelsea Monday" which has very strong contrasting light and shade through superlative musicianship. It was the penultimate release of Fish era Marillion albums in a recent deluxe reissue campaign that also includes Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws, Brave, and Afraid of Sunlight.
