However, she never really seems to go beyond the characters on the table and Hare does not make use of the closed shipboard setting as well as she could.

This Lovely City was featured on the inaugural BBC TWO TV book club show, Between the Covers, and has received multiple accolades, securing Louise's place as an author to watch.

It is one of those novels that you can pick up and put down without overthinking things and getting too stressed out. The opulence of the setting, the fashion and Lena’s new wardrobe are dazzling and so perfectly in tune with the time period. The setting aboard the Queen Mary is excellent and there is a real clarity conveyed in the differences between those in the luxury of the upper decks and those below. Once people start dying off, Lena puts herself into a bit of a detective mode, but she’s fairly passive about it, mostly trying to keep herself on good footing with the Abernathys and trying to keep herself from being blamed for anything.

The vast bulk of the story takes place on the cruise liner as Lena gets involved with a very rich family and secrets are revealed as well as murders! On a lighter note, it is fun to see Lena reading Poirot novels as a contemporary, enjoying his detecting even as she takes up amateur sleuthing under duress. There is discussion at the dinner table of Adolf Hitler and his successes in improving German life after WW1, but this is the run up to WW2 and knowing what comes next in the name of racial purity made this a sobering experience as a reader.

But it’s even more interesting to go below decks to The Pig and Whistle, a makeshift pub in a loading dock area that is populated at night by the ship’s staff, as well as passengers from all different levels of the ship who want a more covert and informal experience. It was a little bit mixed, with the author trying to capture the era and its social and ethnic status issues, and weave in a murder. She has nothing to look forward to until a stranger offers her the chance of a lifetime: a starring role on Broadway and a first-class ticket on the Queen Mary bound for New York. Once on board the Queen Mary in first class, Charlie manages to secure a place at the dinner table of a very wealthy family. But Lena has always had a complicated life, one shrouded in mystery as a mixed-race girl passing for white in a city unforgiving of her true racial heritage. Originally from Warrington, the capital is the inspiration for much of her work, including This Lovely City, which began life after a trip into the deep level shelter below Clapham Common. We can only imagine the taboo nature of a relationship between a black man and a white woman in the early 20th Century, a time when eugenics was gaining a foothold on both sides of the Atlantic. It reminded me of those boorish upper-class men I'd spent too much time with recently, spouting their fake Cockney slang and frequenting the Soho nightclubs, splashing their cash on cheap gin for good-looking girls. I can honestly say I didn’t have a clue what was coming for Lena’s private life, or who was next in the murderer’s firing line.
