Description

First published in 1965, the novel is set contemporaneously with Moominvalley in November (1970), and is the final installment in the series where the titular Moomin family are present within the narrative. I loved her style already, her way with characters and nature and always leaving something on the edge.

Moominmomma has lost her old purpose as a mother in Moominvalley and tries varies ways to recreate it. Stajemy się wszyscy zanadto do siebie przyzwyczajeni i wszystko jest wciąż takie samo, prawda, kochanie? Still some strange moments of magic and wonder, of course, but tempered by cynicism and a warm-but-realistic sense of the petty and no-so-petty impulses that drive people. The respect shown towards the forces of nature is perhaps most visible in the second to last Moomin book, “Moominpappa at Sea”, released in 1965, where the Moomin family moves from the safe and familiar Moominvalley to a distant lighthouse island at the mercy of the sea, storms and the forces of nature. The book is based primarily around the character of Moominpappa, who was heavily inspired by Jansson's father, Viktor Jansson.

Littly My mainly disappeared and reappeared, strolled and adventured around on her own through the whole book, knowing a lot more than any other person on the island, on the story.Moominpappa appears to be having a midlife crisis of some sort, not enough control over his home life, family trying to think for themselves, not bow to his superiority in all things - he is being a twat. When they discover that his birthday is coming, they invite him to a party at the lighthouse, which he reluctantly attends, only to slowly realize that he is the original lighthouse keeper. So much is hidden in that text that it turns into a completely different magic each time you read it. This starting point isn't dissimilar to 'The Secret of the Hattinfatteners' from 'Tales from Moominvalley', where Moominpappa experiences a sudden powerful unhappiness with his home-life and feels compelled to escape.
