ED VR FX-format lens delivers a whole new level of super-telephoto versatility for sport, wildlife and aviation enthusiasts who want to bring distant subjects closer, with ease. After each outing where the lens gets dirty, I thoroughly clean the front element, outer lens barrel, and mount.

Although Nikon 200-500 can work with teleconverters to extend your focal length, I don’t usually recommend using them. Moving from 200mm to 500mm is a large nearly half turn (160°) of the very wide zoom ring, and pretty much will force you to take your hand out of optimal shooting position to make that much of a change all at once. This is good news as there is a guide that says you need a shutter speed the same as or more than the focal length to get a sharp picture (the reciprocal rule) i. That’s particularly true of the extreme corners, and in direct comparison to the high-end Sigma sample I tried. The 500 PF definitely has better IQ than the 200-500, but the small weight is a huge plus compared to the zoom. However, hiking with this lens can be hard due to its weight, especially carrying it up the mountains. All three copies of the 200-500mm VR I have handled so far had very nice and smooth zoom rings, coming to abrupt stops at both 200mm and 500mm marks.

You won't see this unless you're racking the lens all the way in and out, and then you can't see it unless you're stopped way down so you can see anything at all when it's way out of focus. They start facing a subject that’s going to clearly move across their path, and the “wind up” more tension as they try to follow the subject. So out of the 5 total samples, two turned out to be duds from the start, which is not a particularly encouraging statistic.stops of extra light with the VR on, letting you hand hold all day using slow shutter speeds, which my non-VR prime will not be able achieve. Weight-wise, it is probably more appropriate to compare it to Sigma’s Sport version of the 150-600mm lens, which is 560 grams heavier in comparison. Similar to the zoom ring, the focus ring is also nice and thick, which can be particularly useful when manually overriding focus. Turn fast-moving action into dazzling photo sequences—the electromagnetic diaphragm operates in sync for the fastest subjects and shutter speeds while Vibration Reduction image stabilization keeps your shots sharp and steady.

From top to bottom, there is a focus mode switch that allows switching from autofocus with manual focus override to manual focus, focus limiter switch that goes from close focus to infinity (full range) and 6 meters to infinity, vibration reduction (VR) switch and lastly, vibration reduction mode switch that allows switching between Normal and Sport mode. The VR system transformed my ability to capture sharp images, making it an indispensable part of my photography gear. Over the last 12 months he has taken notice of the images I've captured using the Nikon 200–500mm and came to the conclusion that the latest superzooms need to be considered over his big heavy prime. This Nikon 200-500mm is very sharp, but it's difficult to get sharp images with long lenses because of their shallow depth of field, and atmospheric heat shimmer and seeing conditions easily can cloud results. Sharpness: Often regarded as the standard for sharpness, this lens is the sharpest from Nikon I have ever used and beats out the Nikon 200-500.The lens is marked at 100mm intervals: 200, 300, 400, 500mm, and the zoom ring is very wide and towards the front of the lens. Using a 2× converter is an exercise for the truly afflicted; you'll have to use a tripod and focus via Live View.
